Research of microstructure and biocompatible properties on Fe-Al-Mn alloy with recast layer by electro-discharge machining

摘要

The biocompatibility and microstructure of Fe-Al-Mn and electro-discharged Fe-Al-Mn alloys were investigated by optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electro-discharged Fe-Al Mn alloys possess well-biocompatible performance than that without treatment. A recast layer was formed on the surface of the Fe-Al-Mn alloy following electro-discharged machining and the thickness of the recast layer is about 40-110 μm. In addition, nanocrystallization and oxidation occurred on the recast layer following electro-discharged machining, γ-phase and ferrous carbide were formed after electro-discharging, profoundly impacting the properties of recast layer. The γ-phase and ferrous carbide are nanostructures. The nano-(γ-phase) is changed to nano-(ferrous carbide) by electro-discharging reaction during EDM.
