An external jugular vein is sometimes used here as a route for a peripheral venous line, but it is rarely used to cannulate the superior vena cava. The incidence of identification of the external jugular vein was 83% in 53 patients. This approach was tried in 15 patients, with an 87% success rate. In addition, all were free from such complications as infection, hemothorax, pneumothorax or arterial injury. These data are comparable to other recent reports in literature. This approach is enthusiastically recommended for its safety, ease, and reliability.
