Biophysical principles were applied to calculate the maximum number of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) particles that can be phagocytosed for various size and shapes of particles. It was assumed that the particle has an ellipsoidal shape with one longer and two equal shorter axes. It was found that, with the same total particle volume, elongated particles gather more macrophage cells in the phagocytosis process. It was also found that smaller particles within the phagocytosable range induce stronger bioactivity than large particles that cannot be engulfed by the macrophage cells.
