The purpose of this study is to explore the factors contributing to the success of group factice and success model of physician group practice. The study population consists of 3,193 primary care physicians who registered to the Department of Health as co-practitioner with other physicians in April 2002. A postal survey was conducted to these physicians to collect data. A total of 769 questionnaires were returned and yielded a response rate of 24.06%. This study found that five factors respondents considered as the most important are that physician is friendly, that physician S easy to promote open communication, shared the same vision, convenience, and that physician feels himself as a member in group practice. With regard to success mode, the study found that sole proprietorship or being an employed physician were less likely to feel a group practice successful compared to partnership. As to revenue distribution, physicians in a group practice that uses equal shares or numbers of working sessions were more likely to feel successful than their counterparts in a group practice that uses fixed payment plus production. It is suggested that the model of a successful group practice could be partnership, partner physicians from the introduction of friends or classmates, managed by owner or co-owners, and equal shares to distribute revenue.
