Abstract

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of noni fruit juice pre-supplementation on long-distance runninginduced oxidative stress, inflammation, tissue damage and anabolic/catabolic balance in middle aged runners. In this cross-over study, 10 male subjects (aged 50.6 ± 3.0 years) were asked to complete an acute 3-hour endurance running with 85% personal best in marathon running speed. Subjects consumed the designated volume of either noni fruit juice (120 ml/day) or control juice for 7 days before the running. Blood samples were collected from both trials before, immediately, 2 h and 12 h after exercise. Changes in biomarkers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), testosterone and cortisol levels, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), creatine kinase (CK), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) were analyzed. Longdistance running caused a significant increase of MDA, IL-6, CK and cortisol levels with simultaneous decrease of testosterone and testosterone/cortisol ratio (T/C ratio). Before exercise, noni fruit juice supplemented trail showed higher SOD activity than the control trial. We found higher MDA levels in noni fruit juice group, but IL-6, testosterone and T/C ratio were lower compared to the control group. In conclusion, noni fruit juice presupplementation increased the anti-oxidative enzyme activity and decreased the inflammation. However, noni fruit juice supplementation increased exercise-induced oxidative stress and catabolism in middle-aged men.
