The aim of the study is to use the PLGA plates to fix the experimental femur fracture of rats, and compared that with the titanium plates. At the beginning, twenty 10 weeks old, with mean body weight of 500 gm S/D rats were randomly divided into two groups, one experiment and the other control groups. Under general anesthesia, after antiseptic, the femur was exposed, and the femur was cut from the outer cortical bone till the inner cortical bone (with the inner cortical bone intact) using dental high speed with fissure bur (diameter 0.1 cm). PLGA plates were used to fix the fractured femur in experiment group while titanium plates were used for the control group. 20 and 40 days after the surgery, the femur was removed, embedded with paraffin wax after demineralized. The specimens was cut with 5μm thickness and undergoing histological observation after H & E staining. The results showed that the femur fixed with titanium plate healed very well. The femur fixed with PLGA plates tends to get infection and there was a lot of pus formation around the wound. Under histological observation, there was a lot of fibrotic tissue around the screws of PLGA and a lot of cartilages formation next to the defect of the femur. On the other hand, there was dense bone formation around the screws of titanium. There was no fracture of the femur with titanium fixation while the femur fixed with PLGA plates tends to get fracture. The study shows that the Lactosorb PLGA plates are not suitable for fixation over the experimental femoral fracture of the rats.
