Study on the Inhibitory Effect of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Germinated Brown Rice on Colorectal Carcinogenesis

Colorectal cancer has been the first most common cancer in Taiwan for six years. It is a serious public health problem. Colorectal cancer is closely associated with diet and inflammation, so it may be possible to prevent the occurrence of this cancer by dietary modification and inflammatory regulation. Probiotics may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by reducing intestinal microflora enzyme activity and carcinogenic secondary bile acids, producing short-chain fatty acids, preventing the formation of aberrant crypt foci, improving colonic barrier functions and modulating the immune system. Rice is the staple food in Taiwan. Brown rice contains dietary fiber, γ-oryzanol, tocotrienol and phytate, which have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Brown rice is rich in soluble dietary fiber, oligosaccharides and resistant starch, and considered to be a good prebiotics. It stimulates the growth of human colonic probiotics and produces short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which increases the apoptosis of tumor cells. Germinated brown rice is considered healthier than brown rice, as it contains more bioactive components, such as polyphenolic compounds, vitamin E and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Previous studies showed that gamma-aminobutyric acid could suppress tumor formation. Emerging data suggest that synbiotics is a more effective approach than either prebiotics or probiotics alone in health promotion. However, there is no study investigating the preventive effect of germinated brown rice and probiotics on colorectal cancer. Our previous studies showed that germinated brown rice inhibited colonic preneoplastic lesions. We also found that Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis suppressed colorectal carcinogenesis through different pathway. This study will investigate the inhibitory effect and mechanism of combination of germinated brown rice and different lactic acid bacteria on colorectal carcinogenesis.
