The program project is “A medical device for periodontitis treatment through Smart Mouth Guard 3D Drug delivery and wound Dressing Device.” Previous periodontitis treatment used the root planing surgical procedure with antibiotics in patients with bacteria-induced inflammation. However, this antibiotic treatment could be promoted. Project 1 “Smart Mouth Guard 3D Drug delivery and wound Dressing Device development,” is to develop systemic delivery of antibiotics concerning side effects, drug resistance, and high dose requirements. Additionally, the efficacy of locally delivered antibiotics is decreased by saliva and gingivalcrevicular fluid (GCF) induced drug dilution. The Smart Mouth Guard 3D may be especially beneficial to people with liver or kidney abnormalities, pregnant women, the elderly and long-term care patients. Therefore, we will apply for patents according to the combined results of Project 2 “Preclinical animal study of Smart Mouth Guard 3D Drug delivery and wound Dressing Device,” and Project 3 “Clinical trial of Smart Guard 3D Drug delivery and wound Dressing Device.” We will then register for medical device approval and produce pilot Smart Mouth Guard 3D. This product could be utilized as a wound dressing to prevent infection and, due to the improved coating ability, it can be combined with drug delivery resulting in reduced drug doses and treatment time. We predict the Smart Mouth Guard 3D is a biomedical device that has good potential to prevent periodontitis and supplement treatment.
