The study directly targets two key questions. Firstly, it aims to advance our understanding of brain dynamics. This is a growing area in neuroimaging and forms a large part of influential fundamental theories of brain function. Secondly, it aims to investigate the neurophysiological underpinnings of these dynamics. This is essential information for the interpretation of all studies in this area as it tells us about the mechanisms behind the activity patterns that we see. In addition to these core aims, the study also seeks to study how these brain dynamics are related to psychiatric symptoms (in a sub-clinical population). By linking these symptoms to particular neuromodulators and brain properties we can have a better understanding of disorders where these symptoms cause a clinical burden. Understanding these mechanisms is necessary for improving treatment.
